Attitudes and Support and Relationships

Attitudes of others have been identified as barriers to community participation though were less frequently reported than physical barriers in one study (Theis & Furner, 2011). Many people report wanting to visit friends’ or relatives’ houses, but being unable to due to visitability problems (e.g. stairs, narrow doorways, no accessible bathroom). In addition, while in public, other people can become obstructions to mobility when they are not paying attention and block walking paths (Hammel et al., 2015). However, people can also be helpful in promoting mobility. In one study, people with mobility disabilities were more likely to be accompanied by someone during trips to destinations compared to those without (Shumway-Cook et al., 2002). Finally, having neighbours who are on the lookout can promote a sense of safety (Rosenberg et al., 2013). While attitudes of others and social relationships cannot be changed by policies or new environments, they can be changed through education on and integration of people with disabilities and older adults into every aspect of community living.
